Sitting woman with hands on stomach

At Her Holistic Physio, the pelvic floor often comes up in conversation due to all of my clients being women. Some are preparing to conceive, some are on their way to motherhood, some have symptoms unrelated to childbearing, and women later in life may be experiencing new or re-emerging symptoms as their body shifts from menstruation to menopause.

Please note that at Her Holistic Physio, I DO NOT assess the pelvic floor, but can definitely talk about general pelvic floor health, general pelvic floor muscle training, and the role pelvic floor physiotherapists can play in symptom management and resolution.

I work closely with local pelvic floor physiotherapists in Boronia and the surrounding areas to ensure care is well-rounded and inclusive of the areas you’re working on. I also often refer clients to these clinicians and practices.

Pelvic floor physiotherapists have completed additional training to assess and treat symptoms associated with the pelvic bowl and muscles. These muscles sit at the bottom of the pelvis, essentially where a bike seat touches, so they are not visible or assessable with underwear on.

Assessments may include an ultrasound to visually see what the muscles do in real time, and/or what’s called an internal examination.

Internal pelvic floor examinations involve the clinical assessment of the pelvic floor through touching the muscles with sanitised, gloved fingers, which, for women, are inserted into the vagina.

Therapy can support the following:

  • Bladder leakage, no matter how small (any leakage is not normal)
  • Rushing to the bathroom (bladder or bowel urgency)
  • Pain with insertion into the vagina (sex, tampons, finger, etc)
  • Pain in the pelvic floor region, including muscle tightness
  • Chronic constipation or UTIs
  • Prenatal pelvic floor care and birth preparation
  • Perineal massage for birth preparation
  • Postpartum pelvic floor assessment and recovery

As trained physiotherapists, they can also support you in general physiotherapy care too.

If you have any questions about the pelvic floor or what to expect in a consultation, I am more than happy to answer any questions.
